Open the Circle. Awaken the Warrior

Silat Buka Lingkaran (SBL) is a modern approach to Pencak Silat that brings together traditional Silat principles with a practical, progressive and holistic approach to training.
The name Buka Lingkaran can be understood as “Open Circle” — reflecting the idea that learning is an ongoing process and that knowledge is shared, explored and developed within a community.
SBL is not simply a collection of techniques. It is a system for developing the way we move, think, respond and interact.
Silat is a collective term commonly used for the traditional martial arts of the Malay Archipelago, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and surrounding regions.
Across the many different traditions of Silat, there are diverse approaches to movement, self-defence, striking, grappling, weapons, footwork and cultural expression.
SBL draws from this rich heritage while providing a structured approach through which students can explore and develop their own skills.
SBL training encompasses more than fighting techniques.
Students develop skills in areas including:
These areas are not treated as isolated subjects. They are connected through common principles of movement, balance, positioning, timing and control.
Movement is fundamental to the SBL approach.
Students learn how to move with balance and efficiency, change distance and position, maintain awareness and adapt as circumstances change.
Through progressive training, simple movements become increasingly connected to practical applications.
The aim is not simply to memorise sequences. It is to develop the ability to understand, adapt and respond.
Kembangan is an important part of SBL training and provides a way to explore movement, rhythm, coordination, balance and expression.
It can help students develop a deeper awareness of how movements connect and how the body can move naturally between different positions and actions.
Kembangan is therefore both an expression of Silat and a valuable method of developing movement skills.

SBL can be explored through both in-person training and online learning.
Training with an SBL instructor provides the opportunity to develop physical skills through direct practice, feedback and interaction with training partners.
The SBL Academy provides an additional way to study wherever you are, with online courses, SBL LIVE, SBL FIT, SBL TV and other learning resources.
Together, these provide different pathways into the same SBL system.
The idea of an open circle is central to SBL.
We believe martial arts are best developed through practice, exploration, teaching and sharing.
Students come from different backgrounds and may have different goals. Some train for self-defence, some for physical development, some for personal growth and others simply for the enjoyment of learning Silat.
What connects them is the willingness to learn.
Whether you are completely new to Silat or already have experience in martial arts, SBL provides a structured environment in which to explore the art and develop your skills.
